Croesy progress in the Plate

Injury hit Croesyceiliog triumphed at Caerphilly in the first round of the National Plate on Saturday.

Playing several players out of position especially in the threequarters the visitors took the game to their op ponents and after a series of attacks went in front from a penalty fro m outside half Luke Brown. A further series of attacks saw Croesyceiliog score again this time by No 8 Steve Thomas after a driving line out produced a try. Any indication that this was going to be a runaway victory for the visitors was quickly dispelled when Caerphilly scored twenty six points without reply in the next twenty minutes. From a quick throw in the Croesyceiliog twenty two the home side put the ball quickly through the hands to score. Caerphilly were soon on the a ttack again and with an overlap of three to one were awarded a penalty try after a Croesyceiliog player deliberately knocked on and was also sin binned.

The home side were now well on top and scored a further two converted tries to take them into what looked like an unassailable lead.

The second half saw the visitors up their game with the forward pac k taking control driving their opponents back in the scrum and taking the ball up in tremendous fashion. Strong runs from Louie Pengelly , Greg Stephens and Dan Goode were creating havoc in the Caerphilly defence which led to Croesyceiliog scoring wide out. Luke Brown converting with a magnificent kick. Croesyceiliog were not letting their opponents off the hook and after a series of scrums in the opposition twenty two man of the match Louie Pengelly crossed under the posts. The home side were shell shocked by the Croesyceiliog forward onslaught especially in the scrum which eventually led to a penalty try to the visitors after a series of infringements by the home side while trying to defend their try line. Croesyceiliog will be upbeat after this victory and hopefully with the      Injured players returning will use this as a springboard to winning ways in the league.
